Fifty years ago a Beaminster bookseller was looking for a printer. Mrs Forbes of the Eype’s Mouth Hotel recommended John Creed of Broadoak. And in due course the bookseller – the late James Stevens Cox (1910-1997) - had a pamphlet printed by Mr Creed. It was the beginning of a long and happy relationship. Over the last half century Creeds have printed hundreds of titles for Cox’s Toucan Press.

The first pamphlet was just four pages long – ‘Places of interest to visit in and around Eype’. One of the latest titles is ‘The Guernsey Merchants and their world in the Georgian era’, a book written by James’ son Gregory, and running to nearly 300 pages.

Creeds and the Toucan Press

Many of the titles printed by Creeds and published by the Toucan Press have been about Thomas Hardy. There was a series of 72 monographs on the life, times and works of Thomas Hardy, printed in the 1960s. In 1970 the Toucan Press founded ‘The Thomas Hardy Yearbook’ and it is now entering its fifth decade. It is an academic journal and copies are distributed to leading university libraries throughout Europe and North America. Every issue has been printed by Creeds.

Hardy Connection

John Creed, founder of Creeds the Printers, is, coincidentally, related to the Hardy family. His great-grandmother was Matilda Hardy of Puddletown.

John Creed, Audrey Creed, Andrew ‘Harry’ Harrison, Marilyn Harrison and Gregory Stevens Cox celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Cox – Creed relationship on Wednesday evening at ‘The Ilchester Arms’ in Symondsbury. They enjoyed a very Dorset menu.

Their St George’s Night Party at the Electric Palace on April 22nd raised £1500 for The Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance and £250 for Bridport TLC recycling centre. Last weekend printer Matt Williams came third in the coast to coast charity cycle, Watchet to West Bay – approx 54 miles in 2hrs 57mins.

Harry presenting cheque to Annette Plaistow-Trapaud of the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

Creeds director Marilyn Harrison said,
“We’re out in the sticks and so we know that if there is an accident we are going to need the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance. We are an environmental printers and really value TLC’s recycling ethos. It’s important to support our local charities, like it’s important to support out local businesses.”

There’s hundreds of reasons why we love living in the country, especially in the summer when the weather is good. The quiet country lanes are wonderful to wander down. The rolling hills and Jurassic Coast provide us all with plenty of space to relax and exercise.

But a downside of rural life is that when an accident or emergency occurs we can’t always get an ambulance out to help quick enough. The Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance is therefore a much loved local charity because it saves lives in our countryside, rescuing people trapped in remote spots.

Creeds the Printers are located out in “the sticks” at the tiny hamlet of Broadoak, near Bridport. Harry & Marilyn Harrison know that the Air Ambulance is a hugely valuable asset for country folk. Fortunately they have not had to use it for their fourteen staff who work in their beautifully located rural printers but that doesn’t make them any less grateful for the resource that is there if they do.

Matt Williams our superfit printer arriving at West Bay having cycled from Watchet in aid of the Air Ambulance.

This awareness, combined with their interest in environmentally aware printing techniques, led the couple to organise a fund raising event on St George’s night on 22nd April at the Electric Palace in Bridport. Over 200 guests, dressed in red and white, partied all night raising £1500 for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and £250 for Bridport based recycling charity TLC. Many thanks to all who supported the event.

Following on from this, to raise more funds for the air ambulance Matthew Williams our super fit printer took part in the challenge to cycle from Watchet to West Bay on Sunday 19th June. Matt didn’t hang about and came in third place completing the 54 mile course in 2hrs 57mins. Well done Matt – you made it look easy!

Creeds design and print a huge range of publications and printed products using state of the art, eco-friendly equipment. Yet they are never too busy or grand to help with the fiddly details involved with a local charity such as leaflets, posters and raffle tickets. They are always prepared to drop prices for local charitable causes or go the extra mile to make sure print is delivered in time at the right place.

CREEDS CHAMPION CHARITY AWARD

Creeds the printers sponsor the View’s Charity Champion awarded to an individual whose service to a charity is inspirational. A suitable category for a family firm whose business supports hundreds of local charities, fundraising events and inspirational achievements.

This much loved local company have customers all over the UK, France and Channel Islands with a staff of fourteen working from their converted barn based in the tiny village of Broadoak. Creeds design and print a huge range of publications and printed products using state of the art, eco-friendly equipment. Yet they are never too busy or grand to help with the fiddly details involved with a local charity such as leaflets, posters and raffle tickets. They are always keen to offer competitive prices and prepared to go the extra mile for local charitable causes and make sure print is delivered on time at the right place.

It’s said that ‘charity begins at home’. Something that Creeds the Printers know well as a business which is home to three generations of Creeds. Founder John Creed is a distant relative of Thomas Hardy and, though now in his seventies, still helps out with deliveries. Daughter Marilyn and son-in-law Harry manage the team of printers, designers and finishers, now ably helped by their twenty two year old twin daughters Cath and Laura who trained at Yeovil College in print administration and finishing and graphic design at Kingston Maurward.

Marilyn and Harry are familiar faces at many local community events and causes. Marilyn’s Dorset sketches are popular spots in local shows and Harry is a stalwart in the Symondsbury Mummers. Hugely knowledgeable about Bridport life, supporters of sports, arts and local business, they have got involved with many charities themselves. On Friday 22 April they organised a St George’s day party at the Electric Palace in aid of the Dorset Air Ambulance.

Creeds are always keen to help local people writing their own books. Digital equipment means that print runs do not have to be enormous any more. Many people have discovered that writing about their lives is in itself a life-changing experience. Harry and Marilyn are patient, knowledgeable and caring with what can be a momentous event.
